Use of computers expands not only to numeric and text informations, but also to maps, expressing the Earth in 2 or 3 dimensions. And a system using geographic information, especially maps, is called Geographic Information System (GIS). In this lecture, I present some aspects of such systems, considering application to our life. The treated subjects include following fields.
(1) Earth locating, using Geographic Positioning System (GPS): What is the essential techniques in the new, satellite-based system, and what problems are arising around it. Such subjects are to be discussed.
(2) Car navigation: One of the most popular use of GPS is car navigation. But cars use not only informations from GPS. What are the characteristics of maps for car navigation? What other systems are helping steering? These are the topics.
