Language research relating to the economic aspect can be subsumed under the title "economics of language". In this field there are attempts to make a link between money and language. These usually metaphorically apply ideas concerning money to language in order to explain and justify the spread of major languages. In contrast, in this paper I will try to use ideas concerning so-called community money to give value to minority languages and linguistic diversity. The paper aims to bring to the "economics of language" a more critical and creative approach than has been practised hitherto.
