Amongst the various types of dictionaries, dictionaries for foreign students are relatively new. The idea of such dictionaries came from the field of English Language Education in Japan (and elsewhere) during the 1920s, 30s and 40s, in a sense as a result of the meeting of fundamentally different languages.
It is worth noting that one of the main figures in this innovation, Harold E. Palmer, was an ex- Esperantist. The usefulness of a dictionary for foreign students is now generally accepted, not just in English language teaching, but generally in the field of foreign language teaching.
Many such dictionaries are published, in many languages. "Esperanto-Japanese Dictionary", published in 2006 by the Japanese Esperanto Institute, was a trial of such a dictionary in Esperanto; it was aimed at high level learning, and practical use of the language by people who spoke Japanese. A few of it's characteristics, which will interest non-Japanese speakers will be presented.
